Overrun is a tactical simulation of modern land combat in Europe and
the Middle East. It consists of a map view of 40x90 squares each 50
yards across with symbols representing single vehicles, helicopters or
infantry squads. The program comes on a single disk with a manual and a
booklet of unit data, weapon data, information on formations, scenario
notes and terrain effects. The game supports two disk drives and uses
password protection - unfortunately it does not support hard drives.
Four scenarios are provided in which you can choose either the red or
blue forces for two or one players or let the computer play both sides.
However the main idea is to create your own scenarios or campaigns with
or without the help of the map editor.
The wealth of detail, and range of weapons included in this simulation
are overwhelming, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the user
interface or graphics which have a distinctly C64/C128 look and feel
about them. Sound effects include various gun and rocket noises during
play. This is a minor point when looking at the game as a whole because
it is based on moving and positioning units on a map display. Overrun
uses the turn system, and it is essential to read the manual to obtain a
full appreciation and understanding of the game mechanics.
The game requires one meg of memory (mostly for calculations), and has
some limitations - notably the graphics and user interface. But this is
a must have for serious war-gamers as it should provide hours of long
term interest. You should be able to pick it up for less than $50.00
which is good value for such a user configurable simulation with a good
manual. The biggest let-down is probably the presentation of the
package as a whole, the graphics are not of Amiga standard and the use
of an Amiga menu system would have made the simulation more immediately
appealing. However, this is one of those games where the more you put
into it the more you get out of it.
